A closer look at the ideas, inspiration and design choices behind Lumenear’s newest acoustic luminaire.

Every design starts with an idea. For Flora, that idea was to create something playful, soft and inviting, while bringing together two things that are central to Lumenear: light and acoustics.

We sat down with designer Rik to talk about the thinking behind Flora, where the inspiration came from and how the design came to life.

Where did the idea for Flora start?

“I wanted to create a luminaire that felt a little more playful. Something with softer, more rounded forms that could bring a sense of lightness and character to an interior.”

Rather than starting with a technical solution, Rik started with the shape. The rounded elements give Flora its distinctive appearance, while creating a design that feels natural within a variety of interiors.

Inspired by Elements

One of the key sources of inspiration was Elements, a popular acoustic solution from Lumenear’s parent company, In-Zee.

“Elements is such a strong product because it can transform a space quite simply. It adds something visually, but at the same time it has a clear acoustic function. I wanted to explore what could happen if you brought that idea into a luminaire.”

This became an important part of the design process. Instead of treating acoustics as something added afterwards, Rik wanted it to be part of Flora’s identity from the beginning.

When form becomes function

Flora combines a soft, expressive silhouette with acoustic performance and atmospheric lighting. The result is a luminaire that has a clear visual presence without overpowering the space around it.

“For me, the interesting part is finding the balance. It needs to be a beautiful object, but it also has to work. The acoustic material, the shape and the light all have to make sense together.”

That balance is what gives Flora its character. It is decorative, but purposeful. Playful, but considered.

Designed to bring something to a space

For Rik, good design is not only about how a product looks on its own, but about what it adds to the environment around it.

“I like the idea that a lamp can do more than provide light. It can change how a space feels. With Flora, we wanted to add light, softness and acoustic comfort in one gesture.”

And that is ultimately what Flora is about: bringing together light, design and acoustics in a form that adds character to the spaces we spend time in.
